Friday Jerry Popham 2023 Bart Frueh Award Winner...What it means to me

The Friday Jerry Popham, MD winner was Benyam Kinde, MD, PhD for his “DNA Damage Checkpoint Kinases and Traumatic Optic Neuropathy” presentation.

To be selected for the Bart Frueh Award from a cohort of outstanding projects is a humbling experience. The groundbreaking research presented at the Fall 2023 meeting is inspiring, and I feel deeply honored to be a part of ASOPRS and to be selected for this award. This award underscores the shared commitment to advancing our understanding of complex conditions, such as traumatic optic neuropathy, and seeking innovative solutions to improve patient outcomes.

I owe a debt of thanks to my ASOPRS mentor, David Tse, whose guidance has been a steady force in promoting, supporting and guiding cutting edge research in Oculoplastics and Orbital surgery. The collaborative spirit and contributions of Daniel Pelaez have been instrumental in shaping the trajectory of our work, and I express my sincere appreciation for his partnership in this scientific endeavor. Further, the entire Oculoplastics Division at Bascom Palmer deserves recognition for fostering an environment of collaboration and excellence, laying the foundation for impactful research.

Finally, it is essential to recognize the vital role played by the ASOPRS Foundation. My appreciation extends to the Foundation for its continuous support and dedication to elevating the standards of care in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery, through clinical excellence, education, and research. This award is not just a recognition of the past; it is a call to continue pushing the boundaries of knowledge and innovation.
